A calibrated light source capable of illuminating a square object of up to 12×12 cm2 (e.g., one or two adjacent faces of a 1U CubeSat) at different angles of incidence with nearly uniform spatial distribution.
Power density can be set either equal to direct sunlight on the Earth’s surface (so-called AM1) or outside the atmosphere (so-called AM0) or other selectable illuminations.

Description

Although the light spectrum emitted by the 1U Solar Simulator and its color temperature are not identical to that of the sun, SpaceMotionery’s 1U Light Source is calibrated at firmware level to generate light intensity such as to compensate spectral differences and produce equivalent effects to sunlight, both on the Earth surface (AM1) and outside the atmosphere (AM0).

The Solar Simulator allows to perform the following measures:
• Thermal effects on black, white or colored surfaces;
• Photoelectric effects in different types of solar cells (single and triple junction, Si and GaAs);
• Overall behaviour in sunlight of 1U CubeSat (up to 27U, see “integration and compatibility”).

Light emission can be modulated in time, to simulate, e.g. sat rotation cycle.

The main applications are the thermal and electrical testing of nanosatellites (CubeSat in primis), solar cells, small solar thermal demonstration plants or for didactic experiments of thermology or physics.

The 1U Solar Simulator can be associated with the 3U Fixed Stand or 3U Turn Table for straightforward testing of various objects, including CubeSat, solar cell, and other objects.

Two or more 1U Solar Simulators can be stacked or paired to light up 2U, 3U, 6U, 12U CubeSats or comparable size objects (approximately multiple 10x10x10 cm3).

Suggested configurations: Bare; With a fixed stand; With a turn-table; With up to six sensors (Temperature; Voltage, current and power sensors; Other sensors).

As with all other SpaceMotionery systems, the Solar Simulator can be controlled, via WiFi, from a smartphone, a PC or any other system that can interact via WiFi with an HTTP protocol.

    Very simple to use and easy to handle. It can be controlled with several tools and easily integrated with Matlab or python. It easily supports and acquires a number of useful sensors

    Amazing product. The sun simulator produces a uniform distribution that can be set to match your use case. Integration with a webapp and HTTP commands makes it very flexible to use. The additional sensing capability is the cherry on the cake.
